We currently have over 30 talks submitted for TECHbash 2012. However, we have a hole within our IT Professional tracks. These areas include, but are not limited to, Windows 8, Windows 8 Server, Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, MySQL, Linux, Alt .NET, iPhone development, Android development, and hardware setup and configuration. The call for speakers has been extended through Friday, April 6th. Talks can be submitted by emailing iwanttospeak [at] techbash.com.

DALLAS TWP. – For local nonprofit organizations needing improved information technology services, their strapped budget might not allow for certain services.

But during the 2011 NEPA GiveCamp, hosted by Misericordia University and scheduled for Jan. 14-16, IT volunteers will be on hand to assist nonprofits.

According to the university, GiveCamp is a weekend-long event at which software developers, designers and database administrators donate their time and talent to create custom software for nonprofit organizations.

The only limitation is the project should be able to be completed in one weekend.

"We are reaching out to nonprofit social service agencies in need of IT work," said Paul Krzywicki, assistant director of marketing communications.

"These volunteers aren’t only from the school but from all over."

Volunteers for NEPA GiveCamp will be working for the nonprofit agencies on Friday, Jan. 14 from 4 p.m. to midnight, on Jan. 15 from 7 a.m. to midnight, and Jan. 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Misericordia has a responsibility for those in need in the region," said Krzywicki, who has been at the university for five years.

"It is our privilege to offer services to these agencies in our community."

Krzywicki saidit isn’t too late for volunteers, either individuals or companies, to sign up and help.

"We are still looking for volunteers and sponsors. If there is another tech company or web provider that can offer their services free of charge to these nonprofits, please contact us."

Misericordia, Microsoft, Dominos Pizza, Green Mountain Coffee, Pepsi, DiscountASP, Infragistics and DevExpress are sponsoring the event.

November's .NET Valley Meeting Is SOLD OUT

The event being held on November 18th at Luzerne County Community College is sold out. There's still a few more spots for standing room only. The first twenty through the doors are guarenteed t-shirts, free software, and other cool swag. We'll be raffling off two XBox 360 Games and a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. Pizza and Soda will be provided.

Misericordia University will be hosting the Northeastern Pennsylvania GiveCamp in January 2011. A local nonprofit needs your help

Ready to connect with the local tech community for a good cause? GiveCamp needs your support. For one weekend in June, we’ll take on the technology wish lists of 20 non-profit organizations, and we’re looking for about 100 volunteers, both technical and non-technical, to help us do it.

A typical GiveCamp draws 75 to 100 volunteers. Individuals can work with their colleagues in company teams, or they can opt to be matched with fellow volunteers who have complementary skill sets. Everyone is welcome to head home for the evenings – but there are always the diehards who work from Friday kickoff straight through Sunday afternoon. Food and drinks, especially of the caffeinated variety, are provided, along with game systems for breaks.

Technical volunteers

We're looking for graphic or UX designers, developers with .NET/Java/LAMP/Open Source/CMS experience, project managers, system/network administrators, DBAs, and non-profit technical consultants and web strategists.

Non-technical volunteers

Beyond the technology, there are many other aspects that make GiveCamp a success. We need non-technical volunteers to run errands, help with setting up and cleaning up, and everything in between. Whether you can offer a couple hours of your time or join GiveCamp for a couple days, your support is needed.

Member Challenge: Help Out This Holiday Season

User groups, blogs, and community forums exist because of the community. Our User Group, .NET Valley, alone has received thousands of dollars worth of software, books, food, and more over the years to attract members and thank them for coming to our events. It’s time for us to collectively do our part.

For our next .NET Valley meeting on December 18th, we're planning on collecting toys or donations for Toys For Tots. Please don't feel obligated, but at the same time, if you'd like to bring something, we'll graciously accept on behalf of the Marine's Toys For Tots program. If you can't attend or would rather make a monetary donation, that's fine too. You may do so online at the Toys For Tots website.

Synergistic Networks Acquires Penn Software and Technology Services

(Wilkes-Barre) Synergistic Networks, Inc. located in downtown Wilkes-Barre, recently acquired Penn Software and Technology Services, a division of Penn Millers Insurance Company, in a move that creates one of the largest IT consulting firms in Northeast Pennsylvania.
